min 3betting 20bb deep

Hey guys,

this is my first post here :)! I am pretty new to poker and i am mostly interested in theory and strategy design as i love solving games of any kind!

Right now i thought i take on poker and wanted to create my own Strategy and i chose HU 20bb Cap Cash games as i thought those should be pretty easy to solve. As it turns out Poker is wayyy to complex to solve but i think i am onto a pretty tough strategy, so far winning with 8bb/100 over 50K Hands on 0,25/50 - 1/2$!

I know its not HUSNG specific but i thought u guys probably have the most experience in short stack HU strategies.

Sorry for the long introduction here is my Question:

My solution for 3betting in a 20bb game was to just shove, as the EV of a shove and the EV of a 4betshoving Tree is around the same, but when we are shoving SB cant increase his EV by any other measure then having a perfect calling Range.

So i watched a lot of high stakes HU Cap matches and noticed that most of the times the players there are shoving too, but sometimes they do min3bet. So i thought that might be making sense against an Opponent which is pretty tight, as our Range should be pretty tight then too and we keep his Range alittle wider as Positional advantage is almost not existend when we have shallow stacks and tight Ranges. But the High Stakes Regs do it against loose opponents as well and they are not doing it Opponent specific they push and min3bet in the same match. Is it just to make it tougher to play them or is there another argument for min3betting that i dont get?

What arguments are there to min3bet over a 3bet shove - 20bb deep?

Thx

Hi there NinijapenguinI have

Hi there Ninijapenguin

I have always thought the min-3bet preflop was pure fish play. We are inviting our opponent to call getting 1/6 pot odds; this is only really good when we have a high pocket pair. Even ace-king only hits 1/3 of the time, and our opponent can either win the pot with a small pair or bluff us out when we have missed. Any ace or king on the flop looks suspicious, and we will likely get no action even when we do hit. Lower pocket pairs are likely to face at least a single overcard, making for many cooler-type scenarios or, alternatively, a lot of check-folding the best hand. The fact is that we are out of position.

I would personally fold to the min 3bet at 20 bb stacks only very rarely, and then only I was convinced that the opponent had a large pocket pair. If opponent had min-3bet preflop with any degree of frequency, I would not consider folding regardless of my cards.

3bet bigger!

Would be interested to hear further comments.

Hope this helps
