Hello all of you,I am a player from the Netherands and play on FTP, but doubting maybe to switch to Stars, cause the regular speed level is taking something longer but don't know what is better, but must find it a out.But now on to the question how does everybody make video's? You only watch the video or are you making notes? And where you make notes of/I am totally new with video's to improve my game and like to know of it is import how you watch youre video's?also I like other ideas or input how you people improve theire game without watching videos? What is good to do for improving youre, I know play is a good option but are there other options?I now play sessions from 1 hour, 20 minutes playing 5 minute break 20 minute playing 5 minute break, 20 minute playing and then a break for several hours.Mostly I have 2 sessions a day. Greetings,Thijs from the Netherlands
Hello Mr. Monk, and welcome to husng.com. This is the greatest place in the world to learn poker (and I'm not affiliated with the site other than being a member!).Funny you should post this, because I just sent a PM to Ryan (the site's co-founder) about possibly producing a video showing how to study videos. Many will tell you that playing a large amount of SNGs is essential to your learning process, and I agree with that to some extent. But I believe that if you properly study the videos on this site, your time is much better spent than playing for your initial learning curve. Don't get me wrong...it is VERY important to play and put into practice what you know. But I think the best balance will vary from individual to individual, and is probably somewhere around two hours of STUDYING videos to one hour of playing. And I don't just mean watching videos. To get the most of videos, you must REALLY dig into and study the videos. For a 45 minute video, it usually takes me two and a half hours to finish it, because I am taking detailed notes about all the situations that arise that I was not familiar with previously. Even if I believe I completely understand what the instructor is saying and I fully believe I will remember the concept and apply it in my games, I takes DETAILED notes just to be sure. I can go back and studying all my notes any time I wish. Also, by writing it down, it forces you to think about the situation for a longer period of time and perhaps think of aspects of the hand you would not have thought about had you simply watched the video and moved ahead with your life. From there, if you have questions about the hand or comments made -- AND THIS IS IMPORTANT -- post your questions in video comments section. When you do this, be sure to include the timestamp (time which the hand occured during the video) so that the instructor can easily find the hand you are referencing. Some of these videos have been made a few months ago and you cannot expect the instructors to remember every hand from every video.Additionally, when posting a question, copy the link to comments page and PM the instructor, letting him know that you have that question. Some instructors have 40 videos and cannot possibly notice every comment posted for every video. The instructors are all great about answering the questions. A couple exceptions are instructors no longer very active (Primordial and Skates, who incidentally was a co-founder of the site but landed an awesome job). All of my notes are categorized by situation. For example, I have a category "Limped Pots" and this is further broken down into about 40 other categories. When I feel like reviewing a specific concept, it's very easy.Ryan mentioned he would like to get some official study groups going, too. This would be a great way to study.I'll try to answer any other questions you have. I'm fairly new to HU SNGs, but not poker. I've been with this site for three months now I think. I've been playing poker for most of my income since 1996 and I've learned more in the last three months that the entire rest of my poker career combined.
Thanks for youre reaction. My point was also what Playing> Study vids or Study vids > Playing? The problem I now have I watch the vids but do I get it all? That is the question, I think about the moves the coach makes and why he saying does thinks, but I don't doubt on it that his play is riight or wrong, but maybe I must doubt on it why he does it. I pick stuff up but not everything. The problem is when I watch the vid I am willing to paused the vid and willing to play.Studygroups are fine I think but as I have seen on a Dutch forum it worked for a while and then it bleeded dead during issues like being busy in work, study you name it.Other thing I play poker for a while now have started on Stars n the NL2 6-max, then sng, the $4,40 donkaments then back to NL10 and higher was making the step to NL50 when I made a huge misstake, I was willing to adjust my game by getting looser and that cost me alot of money. Then I came back to NL50 cashed all the money out because i get spewy and punished myself top start back over on the NL2. Since then My game get screwed up BIG I started playing everything what I liked without getting better. And changed to several games limit, PLO, DON's.But didn't learn mmuch I didn't make progress so I was looking what I can play. Now I have played the HUSnG and I like these a lot, and I am willing to get better and better and don't wanna quit.so everything where anybody can help me with is welcome!
Hey Monk!Well if you wanna learn husngs this is by far the best site to improve your game. As for your questions:1)Studing videos: to be hinest there is a multitude of approaches to get the most out of your experience here on husng. Try to mix it up and see what works best for you. For me..- I like to watch the video interupted form start to finish, as this helps me understand the flow of the match and all the while I am making mental notes of interesting spots and important comments the coaches make.- After watching the vid, I will rewatch the video and write my notes down using microsoft Word. I make a title of the videos name, instructor, stakes and the date I watched it (including the date helps you reference when you watched the video, and you can track how your thought process has improved/changed by refering to your notes and comparing what you thought in the past to how you think in the present).- It is extremely important to take notes. Use whatever method you feel comfortable with. I make notes using Word, some people have a note pad and write down the notes as they feel this helps them retain what they learn. Qattack takes notes using Microsoft One Note and has organized it so he can search for general principles and important spots for easy refferal (I wish I had the same system - maybe pm for more info).- A couple of suggestions when wating videos and taking notes. Qattack has suggested pausing the video in interesting spots and guessing what line the coach will take and for what reason. Then play the video and compare your thought process to the coach. Another suggestion is to make note of a couple of interesting spots in the video - whether they are specific hands or general concepts stated by the coaches. I do this when i review the videos and use the "hidhlight" function on word so I can find these comments (questions, comments, interesting hands). After writing my notes down, I will write a quick summary of general concepts the video talks about as well as som interesting spots.- once I hev finished watcihing the video, I will review my notes and submit my highlighted notes to the comments section for a response (I really like Qattacks idea of also pm'ing the specific caoch as they have so many videos n this site). Personally, I think this is one of the biggest benefits of having a membership to husng.com - as you have access to the coaches and they are very willing to answer your questions. Just be sure that you include a lot of information if you have a specific question about a hand in the video - blind levels, effective stacks, the hand and flop texture as well as some reads, as this will help the coaches answer your questions.- Some players suggest rewatching the video's after a preiod of time - a week, 2 weeks, month, whatever. This allows you to not only familiarize yourself with the lessons you learned but also keep track of how your thought process is mproving/changing (some spots that seem interesting to you when you first watch a video may seem like common knowledge in a few months time).- Another suggestion is to play a few games after you watched a video and try to apply what you learned, You can also mark down common spots (general or specific) and then try to reffer to your notes or HUSNG's search function to find video's that deal with those spots.- lastly, if you disagree with a play in the video, make note of it - try to analyze wh th coaches made ths play and then ask your question - either in the comments section or on the forums. Coaches can make mistakes too, and their play is constantly evolving so wht they do in a video may change in a week - a few months later Other ways to improve your game:- Post HH's in the forum.- Join a study group. You mentioned this already. It is important to find a group of like minded individuals who are enthusiastic and commited to learning the game, as a lot of study groups break down into unrelated chat, and eventually implode. If anything, try to find 1 or 2 people to review HH's with (pm me if you want) as this is a really good way to learn.- Check out all the stuff this site has to offer - the forums, blogs and coaching deals.GL
Thank you very much for youre reaction Mrrunsgood. I can PM you but a prolem is I come from the Netherlands so I am a wake on other times then the most people here on the forum are dure timesettings.I have a Month account here on the site but I am willing to get another month account as well in hope that I can climb up with my bankroll and then maybe taking a year account. I really do have what on youre advice and thank you very much. The site also is great dure the the relative "small group" I think this is even better to get better advice. I will check out the site and also watch the blogs. Thank you all for youre advice.
I still got a little question, the video's from wich coach are good for a slighty winning HU SNG player on the lowstakes. I begun with the HU sng for about two months ago, and played about 700 games I do know something about itI have seen the scratch movies from Primordial beginner, inetermediate also I have seen reing forcing fundamentals, the series from MJW006 endgame from rypac, en some other vids. But I dont wanna make the misstake I have done before to put stuff in my game that isn't applicable on the Low en Mid stakes HuSNGs
Almost everything can be applied in Low stakes, in my opinion BI is over rated.
"Almost everything can be applied in Low stakes, in my opinion BI is over rated."I really strongly agree with this. The buy in is just a wager on the game itself, it has nothing to do with the quality of play inside. At higher stakes there tends to be better players and less fish, but there can still be good players at low stakes and bad players at high stakes.
Ah okay, so it doesn't matter if I am playing the $5 or $2 buyins i can also watch video's from the $55 buyinn cause now I am only watching till the buyinn level of $22.But i have troubles with making notes off the video. I have the problem with when the coach is saying it than it must be right, and not really think about it.
Hi again Monk. First, check out this thread:http://www.husng.com/content/hello-im-new-where-should-i-startMy post of recommended videos is three down. You have watched some of these already.I will be making an expanded video guide when I get the time and motivation, hopefully very soon.I would recommend watching a lot of Fydor's videos. Most of them concentrate on the very basics, which are super-important to master so you can have a solid foundation. Basics will take you a long ways...probably to the 30s I would guess. Here is an assortment of other recommended videos, in no particular order:Rypac 5, 10, 27, 31, 32Hokie 4, 24 (i haven't watched a lot of Hokie's videos yet, so I will be recommending a lot more soon)Fydor 14, Leakfinders: 6/23, 8/25, 9/11 (can start at 9:45), 9/15, 10/1, 11/5That should give you a good start...These videos focus on understandable and solid ABC play.
Thank you very much again. a certainly do have a lot on the list you made. The topic I had seen a couple days ago, but still gonna check out some vids. The last days I do get the hang of the game better and better. When I played on the beginning I was willing to stab almost every pot, and finish the match off in yje levels 10/20 or 15/30 but lately I am getting more confidence in my game. And have made the step to the $5 HUSNG regular speed on FTP, so now I am going to concentrate me some more on the video's from the list you recommended and some other vids. And hopefully I do make some progression in my game. Thank you very much for youre advice. And I am looking forward to see the videolist you are making.
You might find this helpful. Watch the video without any sound the first time. Act like you are playing this opponent. Your goal is to decide what play you would make based on position, type of opponent, stack size, how you expect to win the pot with this hand (making best hand, opponent folding or you folding if you can't win the pot) ect. Then listen to video and see where the instructor made plays different than you did. Listen to the instructor's reasoning for making these plays. Determine if his thought process makes sense to you. If you don't understand his thought process or you don't agree with his thought process then ask questions in the video forum. Hope this helpsPaulIB_FishingSuggesting time consuming ways to study
