New Poker Tool: ROI Calculator and Kelly Criterion Bankroll Calculator

This new tool has two steps and three inputs.

First, if you do not know your ROI, put your winrate, buyin and rake in the boxes on stop one to calculate your ROI.

Then you choose your level of risk (quarter, half or full kelly), followed by your bankroll. The tool then tells you your recommended buyin level to play based on those parameters. You can view the new tool on the Kelly Criterion Calculator Page.

An interesting, but also very dangerous tool, especially for beginners. Lets say someone plays the $7 reg / turbo speed HU SNG in order to get familiar with HU SNGs but has a BR of $1200. His ROI is 6%. Now, we put in those numbers with full Kelly Criteria and it suggests that this player could play up to $72 BI (17 BIs seems to be very little btw, even with this high ROI) games. Apparently it makes the assumption that the ROI is gonna be the same at every BI level, which is clearly not gonna be the case - at least not at a regular basis.

A newbie $7 player with a $1200 bankroll is quite rare though. That's almost 200 buyins. That said, it may be a good idea if we attach a link to a longer explanation article in the near future. Somebody like Coffeeyay might be an ideal candidate, or one of the poker tool creators like Genher. I'll talk to some of the guys and see what we can do, thanks for the suggestion.

There might be plenty of players that origin from other fields and therefore do have a built BR all ready. But then again; why should a fromer PLO-MTT-Player start learning HU SNG at the highest level that is available to him?Personally, I origined from CG and FR SNGs but did still start out at the $3.50 / $7 BI level (not for grinding me up, but for makeing first experiences)

That's true, but if they have

That's true, but if they have a 6% ROI in the $7s and they came from a winning background in another game, they will very likely have at least basic bankroll knowledge so that they aren't going to jump into the $70s blindly. If anything, I think a player that doesn't start at the $7s might see "oh crap, on my $400 bankroll I shouldn't register the $50s!" Even if they truly did know it, it sometimes helps to see something.

nice tool. @barrin : the

nice tool.@barrin : the thing with using kelly BR mangement is that, in theory, you need to redo the kelly calc pretty much after each game to decide your limits and reinput your roll and new ROI (or at least very frequently anyways).  Kelly is really good at taking you up limits but also very fast in taking you down limits when thing go wrong. In theory, Kelly's risk of ruin is 0! In reality it's a bit more because the BI are fixed but still, if applied properly it's optimal and this is by far the best way to grow your roll (if it's what one wish to do OBV)

A little credit would be nice! RiskOriented designed this tool originally three years before you.

Michael Sheehy designed this one

Michael Sheehy designed this one, so I will ask him if he used anything from you as a source and happily add credit if that is the case.
While we're at it, perhaps you can correct some misinformation about me posted on your website.

Hi risk_oriented,
I am the author of this tool.
To say you originally designed this tool is a little far fetched in my opinion. The Kelly Criterion was first published in 1956. It is designed to be used in any gambling situation in which you have a positive expectation.
If you compare the two side by side they are obviously completely different. Yours is in flash I think, mine is in Javascript so the code would be different to begin with.
The the layout and the design are also poles apart.

Michael(aka webmaster222)

To add to the above post,

To add to the above post, there are about 3 spreadsheets on the 2+2 archive doing the same thing. Pretty hard to claim ownership on this one IMO
