Silly question, but all the answeres i found are similar to somthing like you have 700 the other player 300 so the effective stack is 300. Thats clear, but what if the players post their blinds? Do they count towards the effective stack or not? As you cant really use your blind to play with i would say no? Another thing - postflop 300stack raises 40 - so postflop he has 260 left when getting called. Effective stack would now be 260 for any further action as the money thats already in the pot does or doesnt count? Thanks for your help.
The effective stack is the total investment you can make. Blinds are dead money - unless you are in a situation where you have like as 260 chips after posting the BB (40 chips) and your villain has 260 chips after posting the SB (20) - you of course still get the 'discount' from the blind you all ready posted and the ES would be 240.Postflop it is pretty much the same story, but the question really is: what are you useing those numbers for? If you wish to calculate your Stack-pot-Ratio or your implied odds the way of thinking has to be another then if you calculate the effective stack in order to decide if you wish to shove or not.
