Ask a Pro Thread About Hypnotherapy and Mindset Coaching for Poker
I’m Elliot Roe (DHP), a fully qualified professional hypnotherapist and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) practitioner based in Las Vegas Nevada. I qualified with RBCCH (Royal Berkshire College of Clinical Hypnotherapy), and I am a member of the American Board of Hypnotherapy. I have developed a hypnotherapy program to help players reduce tilt and improve their focus at the table.
I have worked with a number of professional poker players. Also, I work with UFC competitors to help them mentally prepare for their fights by improving their focus and confidence. Hypnotherapy has been shown to be an effective tool in many sports, and I believe it has been under-utilised in poker. Poker is a game where playing with the correct mindset is incredibly important. Hypnotherapy is exceptionally effective at achieving the right mindset and effectuates positive change. I believe it is the fastest and most effective way of reducing and removing tilt issues.
MP3's I have made a specific pre-session HUSNG Mp3 available only through HUSNG.com it will help you to warm up effectively for your session and improve your mindset and focus. It covers tilt, reg issues, focus, confidence and A game. Many players have found using my Mp3’s as a warm up a fast and effective way to improve there mindset at the table.

Private sessions In one-to-one hypnotherapy sessions we can identify root causes of negative behavior at the table, such as tilt, anger, self-sabotage, low confidence or lack of motivation. Once the source of the destructive thoughts has been pinpointed, hypnotherapy is used to reduce or remove them completely. This creates long-term change as you gain an understanding of your mindset and the tools needed to overcome this problematic behavior.
It is possible to progress much faster with a client using hypnotherapy rather than more traditional therapies, as communication takes place directly with the subconscious mind. What could take years to resolve using psychoanalysis, can take just weeks or months using hypnotherapy. Once we have resolved the internal issues I will use techniques to create triggers relating to your “A game” and being in “The Zone” by practicing these techniques you will be able to play to your fullest potential more frequently and your game will develop more quickly. By improving your focus and patience at the table you will better understand the weaknesses in your game and you will feel compelled to resolve them. Imagine the increase in your ROI with:
:-Reduced or complete resolution of tilt issues
:-Improved focus during sessions
:-Increased patience at the table
:-Increased awareness of tells
:-A new improved love of poker and a interest in improving your game
:-A better understanding of your personal weaknesses, where they stemmed from and strategies to combat them
Sessions I offer live sessions in Las Vegas or via Skype for $150 a session. First session 90 minutes following sessions 1hour. If a package of 5 sessions is booked and paid upfront I offer a discount rate of $550 (saving $200.

What are some of the more common issues you deal with and what sort of success rate do you have?
(I'm giving Elliot some softball questions to start him off :D)
Skype/AIM- cogdissonance1
Hi Cog,
Thanks for the easy start,
The most common issues I deal with are:
Tilt in all of its forms, mistake tilt, winners tilt, losers tilt etc
Ego Wars
Motivation Issues
Confidence issues
Anxiety on and off the table
Self sabotage
The success rate is very high, with each issue we work on finding the root cause of any problem in the clients past and resolving it there. Once the client has resolved those emotions the issues at the table tend to just disappear.

What personal experiences do you have in playing HUSNG?
Hi.
I don't play HUSNG, in terms of poker I play only 1-2 and small buy in tornis here in Vegas, I'm a therapist far more than a poker player.
The lack of experience in HUSNG hasn't effected may ability to help players from this specific game type and I have successfully worked with a number of HUSNG players.
HUSNG is more emotional in many ways than other forms of poker as you have the added dynamics of direct competition, reg wars and egos. Hypnotherapy can help reduce this increased emotion through understanding why you are feeling that way and therefore improve your ability to play your best poker at the table.

I see Cog is going the infomercial dynamic route ;) Cog: How much did the audios help you as opposed to his 1 on 1? I've also gone the Jared Tendler route(book) but it didnt survive my tilt long enough to read it ;)
Also, Please contact Lotte Lenya asap...his chain smoking is out of control and we need him alive for more videos!!!
Any samples to share? Is the prewarmup like a mantra?
thx
"Any samples to share? Is the prewarmup like a mantra?"
The pre-warm up is a hypnotic relaxation followed by suggestions and visualisations to help you prepare for the session. The best way to describe it is a guided meditation.
There will be a free short break Maximiser available on this site over the next week or so to demonstrate the concept.
Thanks
Elliot

Hello. First of all, thank you for doing this, and second of all, sorry for my english.
I have a personal question and is something I´ve been struggling for the last months, maybe you can help me...
For the last 2 years I´ve been studying Heads-Up. Watching videos, reading books, articles, foruns, taking notes, asking questions, etc...Before that I was a recreational player, and I would play just for the fun of it.
But in that time I started to study more seriously, I´ve become obsessed for getting better, and I started to play less and less and studying more and more each day. I started to understand my limitations, I started to understand that this game is all about logic, probability and psychology and, the more I realized that, the more I would study and less I would play, because I knew I still wasn´t good enough.
Now I have this...I don´t know how to call it, maybe "fear" of playing? It gets to the point that I make excuses to myself for not to play HU games.
I think it´s because I´ve put my expectations too high. I started to develop this idea that I could actually make some money in poker if I studied hard. I watch the other guys playing in my limits and I think that I´m good enough to beat this limit, but in the end of the day, I end up playing just one or two games or not playing at all, because I´m afraid I´m not good enough to correspond my expectations and my goals.
It´s not about the money, I play low limits and I´m not afraid to loose my bankroll or something like that, I think it´s more like fear of loosing and fear that I´m not good enough to accomplish what I want to accomplish.
I don´t know if this makes any sense, but I really need some help on this.
Hi,
Thank you for your question.
Fear/anxiety around playing is an issue I deal with frequently, it's a form of self sabotage.
There could be a number of factors at play, you could be afraid of failure as you said but it may also be worth questioning if you are actually concerned with success. If you did play and succeed how would it effect your home and family life? Would it leave you with difficult choices to make? Some players shy away from the game due to this.
With hypnotherapy we would explore these emotions and look to discover where these feelings originated from. Many times issues are seen in your everyday life as well as the table and we work to help you understand and resolve them. An example of this I've found is that players who struggle with motivation at the table often drifted through their education never putting in full effort and getting by on only their intelligence. As this is understood to be a habit the player can choose to make changes and create a more optimal schedule to work from.
Feel free to PM/email if you would like to discuss your problems at the table further

nunovaz,
I can help you with the fear of playing... it's "resistance" please read "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield. I promise it will solve your problem... if that book doesn't, I swear nothing else will.

What would be an ideal treatment program with your system and how would it work over the long run? It seems this type of training would require more than just one session to work properly. Have you ever had negative effects from this such as players becoming too in touch with emotions or issues through hypnotherapy and becoming over-sensitive so to speak, hence affecting their game negatively?
Yes, you're right. It requires more than one session; typically, players have between 5-10 sessions on a weekly basis. As we work through your issues, you should notice a reduction in your anxiety and your emotions around poker. I haven't had any players finding an increased sensitivity to their emotions, as the process is designed to reduce the emotional impact. The process has always had a positive, rather than negative, impact on my clients' poker and general mindset.

Save yourself some money and get the book The Mental Game of Poker 1 and 2 by Jared Tendler.
From a psychological point of view: is it possible to create an alter ego, which can be fully controled at the point of creating and summoned and un-summoned once it exists?
Hi.
Well?
Hi.
Unfortunately that's not something I have had experience with.
I believe some NLP courses try and utilise the concept but I can't comment on its effectiveness .
Good luck at the tables

Purchased your warm up mp3, which on first listen did boost my focus and even rode a couple of crazy variance games without feeling tilted. Will absolutly be building it into my pre session routine.
Any recomendations for a basic warm down post game?
I also offer a warm down MP3 so I'm a little biased towards that....
If you're not looking to use an MP3 meditation is very effective as is a post game debriefing. Write down how you feel you performed emotionally and technically in the session, look through or note any hands that need further enquiry and then leave poker behind for the day and enjoy your evening. It's a great habit to leave poker at the table and bring more balance into your life.
Good luck at the tables
Elliot

thanks, the leaving the poker behind bit is very salient.
whilst i've got a mind-boffin on the line i do have a little question:
if anyone looks at my results graph the overall tend is upward and i do beat my [albeit micro] stakes quite comfortably. but every few hundred games there is a straight line plummet. on around 5-6 occassions ive had a 10-15 game spell where i drop 10 buyins. i know a lot of this is due to the inherent variance in HUSNG's, but might there be a mental-game leak at play here? what sort of thing could be going on?
is there a good technique for resharpening the mind / focus during these periods. atm i just grind until ive obliterated the loss back into profit.
.
Hi
The variance in the games means those 10bi d/s are completely normal. You will definitely have to face them throughout the year.
The key here is whether you start changing your playing style whilst losing and whether that contributes to the length of the downswing. The best thing to do is look at previous downswings and spend some time going through your HHs look at whether it was bad play or just variace causing the issue. If it was variance well done playing through was the right thing to do. If it was poor play next time take a break, listen to the MP3 again, refocus and try and accept it's just part of this game type.
Hope that helps
Elliot

Take it easy on me ~[Romanian guy here]
Right ..so first of all I want to thanks to Eliot for what he had done for me ,and the way that he managed to make me what i am now.So it all started a month or two ago i can't remember exactly...but anyway i was going throw a horibble period pokerwise but in my personal life as well.I was playing and playing and i wasn't getting any results no mather what i would've done nothing changed ,this week i would make 400 dolars next week i would lose 500 and keep going like that ,not t mention that i lost 700 dolars in a day playing 15's ...so horrible when it came to stop playing or tilting.I knew that my problem was mostly pshicological than tactical so i decide that if he can't fix me....i;ll just quit poker because that wasn't profitable the way that i was doint it. GUYS i mean.....after the first session with Eliot ...my results went throw the roof and i was finaly able to make a profit of 1.5k//month playing 15's .I had major major problems with tilt and i was swearing and hitting things if i get coolered ...or not sending money via pokerstars because i'll bust my roll afterwards or all kind of things BUT he managed to fix me in the end.
I WAS SCEPTICAL as some of you may be....and i was like yeah right its just a waste of time he can't change my life just by talking to me throw Skype but HE DID.
I didn't had anything else to do so i was like ok i'll give it a try ...and Thanks God that i did :).I never thaught that my tilt issue willl be fixed is such a short time because it was so bad that i can't describe it to you.It wasn't that much about not studying or not knowing to play but i was tilting harddddd :)).
Now i have made 2 sessions with Eliot and i'm impriving every day ....something that i wasn't thinking about ever before ,making lots of money ,playing my best ever poker and enjoing being a true poker player or as Eliot likes to say "Professional Poker Player" even though i don't consider myself a pro i manage to make more money that i would ever imagine....
SO if you guys have any tipe a problem but mostly TILT problems he's the guy who will make those problems dissapear......I GIVE HIM ALL THE CREDIT FOR WHAT I MANAGED TO ACHIVE AT THIS POINT OR WHAT I'M GOING TO. THANKS ALOT ELIOT
v~g
Thanks for the great feedback!

Hi Guys
I'm speaking at a series of seminars during the WSOP this year. The speakers are Jonathan Little (former WPT player of the year) Zach Elwood (author of "Reading Poker Tells") Dr Trica Cardner (author of "Positive Poker") and myself.
This link has details about the seminars, what we'll be covering and what's included: http://floattheturn.com/seminar/
I think for an online professional Zachs talk on understanding/reading tells will be particularly valuable during the series.
Hope to see some of you there

"Working with Elliot was a new experience for me before my last fight. I found it to be a calming positive reinforcement for the things to come in the upcoming fight. I had never been put in the type of stressful scenario as I was for the title defense against Joe Soto and Elliot helped ease the tension of that situation. The mind is a powerful tool and he helped in showing me how to use it to my highest benefits"
