Help the new guy

Hello everybody

New to the site, and pretty new to poker as well, and i was wondering which video, book would you recommend for a beginner in SNG.

I did download the free Ebook, any other good books around that are aimed at beginners ? So many videos on here, is there maybe a recommended section in the forums, aimed at fairly new poker players, or a good beginner video pack, that kinda takes your through everything you need to know about sng`s ?

I`m probably going to buy PokerTracker 4 once i`m off  the trial account, and was wondering which HUD would be good for me.

Hope you guys can help

It is summer time and most

It is summer time and most people from the site prefer spending time on the beach or drinking beer than posting on forums.

If you are new to poker I would recommend watching all free videos first.
There are many free videos on this section of the site:

http://www.husng.com/forums/general-strategy-forums/free-poker-videos-forum

Then you can try to play some games and decide what format you like (hyper-turbo, turbo, regular-speed).

After you get some experience and decide what format you like most then you can invest some money and buy some video packs or books.

For a beginner I would recommend Standard Video Pack which is $50 or if you want to invest more money Premium Video Pack which is $150. Both of these have lots of videos and are good for a new player. Some of videos are outdated but general principles are still good for a new player.

When you get more experience you can invest in some more specialized video packs. Sentin's Crushing Fish Like a Boss Video Pack is good for beginner hyper-turbo player and Greenbast Beginner Turbo Speed Pack is good if you prefer turbo format.

If you prefer books you can try this one:

Heads-Up No-Limit Hold 'em by Collin Moshman

This book is very basic but good for a beginner.

I would also strongly recommend some book on basic poker math and odds, something like:

Poker Math That Matters - Simplifying the Secrets of No-limit Hold'em - by Owen Gaines
The Math of Hold'em -  by Collin Moshman
Killer Poker By the Numbers: Mathematical Edge for Winning Play - by Tony Guerrera
Practical Poker Math: Basic Odds & Probabilities for Hold'em & Omaha - by Pat Dittmar

After this you can start learning some more advanced stuff.

Good luck.

Tnx for taking your time off

Tnx for taking your time off beer, and making a nice post like this :) Not a lot of incentive for me to drink beer on such a crappy, rainy day. I seem to like hyper turbos the most because of their quick format, especially heads up. Currently listening to the mental game of poker by Jared Tendler.

Will check up Collins book, and also one of the math books. What about Hud`s, what`s your recommendation there ? I`m currently trying Cofee HUD lite, but i find it a little daunting. Is there some sort of guide for cofee hud ? So many stats, half of them i have no clue what they mean...

 What about Hud`s, what`s

What about Hud`s, what`s your recommendation there ? I`m currently trying Cofee HUD lite, but i find it a little daunting.

For a new player it can be very confusing to think about so many stats and numbers and I would not recommend it straight away. It is better to use simple HUD at first and focus on few important stats.

Check free hud section here on the site or you can also make your own HUD in Poker tracker with some most important stats. (open %, 3bet %, VPIP, cbet %, fold to cbet %, fold to 3b... )

After you start playing more seriously CoffeeHud is a must, but for a beginner it is better to use something simpler in my opinion.

Hi.

Some help...

Hey buddy,

Very unusual that nobody stepped in to help. Here's some advice (specifically for HUSNG hypers) - others may disagree, but I felt the following materials were useful:

  1. Mers eBook - read this; it will give you a fundamental understanding of HUSNGs
  2. Chadders0 hyper turbo video pack - undisputedly the best started video series for hyper HUSNGs
  3. zZz Tilt & phl500 hyper turbo pack
  4. zZz Tilt hyper turbo beating regs pack

Also, at any stage of your development:

  1. Theory of Poker (David Sklansky)
  2. Mental Game of Poker (Jared Tendler)
  3. Watching any recent poker tournaments, preferably with professional players commentating - you will be surprised how many general concepts you can pick up just by watching these

Software to buy:

  1. Poker Tracker 4
  2. Coffee HUD

Reading the eBook will take some time and rightly so. Once you feel you have an understanding of HUSNG then move on to the video packs. It should take you quite a few months before you should watch and understand the last video pack suggested... It is quite a slow learning process as the standard of the average player is very high these days.

Whilst it is vital to study and learn, without doubt (in my case at least) the way to improve is to play. After a few thousand games you will begin to feel comfortable and will be able to think strategically about eating your opponents and the materials you read/watch will start to make sense - there will be a lot of 'eureka' moments but I stress once again, becoming a winning poker player is not a quick fix and these days takes a serious commitment. I would suggest the $1.50 hypers (or $3.50 if you have the roll) with 100 buyins or so, with around 60% time playing and 40% learning.

Gl!

You're welcome

And good luck. Just to clarify; I meant 'beating your opponents' as opposed to 'eating your opponents', though it has crossed my mind during monkey tilt. Hope it all goes well.
