Hello everyone,
this is one of the key hands that came up in my 5 game match against TNixon from 2+2, probably the one I'm most annoyed with.
I had won the first two matches semi smoothly (he made a really loose call for 50% of his stack in the first game, after which I caught some nice cards to finish him off, and in the second game I coolered him straight over straight for most of his chips).
I had not 3 bet him with any regularity, and decided to stick in a random 3 bet as he was opening wide on the button, to avoid getting run over, and put pressure on him preflop. We had not played any major 3 bet pots in the first games, he had either folded to my rare 3 bets or to the c bets.
As I had not expected him to flat call at all, I was completely thrown off and, facing a tricky post flop situation I had never experienced before, threw away the third game.
Reads on him were that he was playing solid, almost too ABC and passive IMO, not putting in enough tough spots. He seemed very content to check down showdown value for example, and did not seem to try any fancy moves. Which of course makes my play even worse.
Not that many hands had gone to showdown, I was playing reasonable small ball poker to this point and I think he probably viewed me as a nit (thanks to my astute pre match mind games ;))
Without further ado :

In hindsight, I probably should have made a normal c bet. My panicked reasoning was that I wanted him to either feel that his 66-88 might be good, or try to take the pot down with his random air. Since his betting sequence indicate a set/king or a bluff, I should have flatted the turn bet, and check/folded river I guess? Given the situation in the match, he probably would not have tried a 3 barrel bluff even though my hand looks like a scared TT.
But what to do after a c bet.... if he raises? if he flats and raises turn? if he flats/flats? should I bet in bet/fold mode after the flop?
I can't think of a line that would save me that much money on this flop.....
Is the problem the actual hand I chose to 3 bet with?
On a side note, I'm generally uncomfortable with 3 betting, especially when it's not for value, and I think a theory video on 3 betting would be very exciting.
Cheers, thanks for your input!
Jeff
I'm no expert but I really dislike your 3-bet with a hand like K6o. I would much rather 3bet a hand like 910ss if you want to make a move. The obvious problem with K6o is when you hit your top pair, you're like "cool, I was stealing and hit top pair, yay!" and it makes it more difficult to fold. I also would have led out on that flop as you would have had a lot more information based on how villian reacted.
Does FTP really have $1 HUSNG's?
I definitely wouldn't 3bet K6o regularly or check it back on this flop as my standard line.. but with some metagame in play I think this is just a generic cooler. You aren't giving up top pair kings in a 3bet pot on a dry board.
ya K6o is not the best hand to make a false 3bet,lead that flop and fold if reshoved,if u get flatted shove any turn
I think that folding to a reshove after flopping top pair would be a very serious mistake here. If he expects you to be cbetting most of your range then he could easily be shoving worse hands. Secondly, if you are folding after hitting one of the best flops possible for you then you are going to be grossly exploitable (I wouldn't really worry about being exploitable in $1 games, but the guy he is playing against in this is a long time winning regular).
