I talk about notes a lot in

I talk about notes a lot in my videos but it isn't the central focus in any of them. I've noticed that a lot of people put notes like "opens 3BB" where it tells you something about how your opponent plays but isn't really helpful to you. The problem with a note like this is that even if you know he opens 3BB it isn't descriptive enough for you to know how you need to adapt to it. Secondly, if he is opening 3BB you will notice this without the note. I break my notes down into two parts: general notes and specific hands. For example, if I had a note that was something like "CRAI for 4PSB w 65o on K95r" then as a general note I would probably put that he is aggressive or that he tends to just go with any piece of the board. I keep them separate because the general notes can change as I learn more about them but nothing changes how the hands played out.

Ryan also talks a bit about

Ryan also talks a bit about this in his latest 3-part leakfinder series.In one of these videos, his student also made some notes which don't really help at all, like "lead 60 into 180 on 752-rb" - and then he folds.This note simply doesn't help at all because next time you're in the same situation, you see that your opponent leads into you, but knowing that he already did so before doesn't help at all.  Something like "often leads 2/3rd pot on low-connected board" would help, but it takes a lot more than just one hand to develop a read like that.  And note that this also implies that this opponent won't lead on other board textures.However, there are things that you can already see from just one hand, for instance:

  • Does not 3bet KQs / AQ+ / JJ+
  • Check/raises bottom pair / air - and how does he continue on later streets ?
  • Leads top pair good kicker
  • Plays flush-draw aggressively / passively
  • Bluffs / does not bluff missed draw at river
  • check/call flop, check turn, lead river == ?
  • Lead/calls with a draw
  • AK == Nuts (I use this when my opponent calls down and goes broke with AK, no pair no draw, in a reraised pot)

Notes like this can give you valuable information on how to play future hands.
