I'm not sure if we still have alternative forum skins, I've put in a message to the webmaster and he should reply here.

If there is no easy alternative, I would suggest dimming the monitor and/or printing out interesting threads for the time being.

But if there is no easy alternative, I'll see if we can get some secondary skin that has a darker background for you.
