Odds for chasing a card

I've just started watching primo's from scrath 1. at 19:04 he says he almsot got odds to call to chase the either a 10 to make his str8 or the ace for a pair. How do you determine wether or not you got the odds to call or not?

You can do it a number of

You can do it a number of rough/quick ways in game too.Pot odds versus odds of you making a hand you think is rarely beat is a nice simple way you can use this effectively enough when starting out.If the pot is 300 and you're facing a 100 chip bet, you're getting 4-1 (pot + his bet versus what you have to call) which is 20% equity needed to continue.  If you have a flush draw + two over cards you think are good most of the time, you'd have 9 outs to the FD and 6 outs to the over cards.  So that's 15 outs.  You can assume they aren't good all of the time, so maybe look at it like 13 outs in this case.  With one street to come that's roughly 26% of the time you'll make a hand that is good (using the 4 x 2 rule of outs multipled by 2 for one street of play left gives you your chances of hitting that card, or multiplied by 4 if two streets to play). So in that example you need to hit your hand 20% of the time to continue and you'll hit it about 26% of the time, so you can then continue on.There are obviously some exact issues with doing it this way, but that should suffice for you.  Like with a HUD, don't use this to make your decisions entirely, just use it to get an idea of where you're at, breaking the "rule" both ways is appropriate in plenty of situations, but if you have no good reason to call and you are looking at needing 25% to continue and you only hit your hand 15% of the time, it probably means you should fold.
