Variance in hypers!

Hello guys!

I am playing 3,5$ hypers on Stars, working on my game every single day, putting tremendeous effort in. I really love this game and my EV ROI is 5,4 % over 5000 games. However my real ROI is currently -0,1%. I am getting frustrated, I am sad everyday. I finish every session way below EV and there is no end to this, only good thing is that I almost never tilt. I even download PT trial cuz i thought my HEM ev isn't working fine. But obviously EV line is working fine:( I am playing vs. such bad players (not that I am really good) but when end game comes I am losing all the time. Guys is that normal??? Should I keep on playing them and try and results will eventually come or should I rather stop and go play something else. How long can these streaks ob bad luck lasts....10 000, 20 000+ games??? Every feedback would be welcome cuz I am really really sad and depressed because of this, especially beacuse I try so hard and work on my game so much. Ty and enjoy!

hypers

Hello !
Yes, variance is definitely huge in hypers. It's really common to run way under ev, even for much bigger sample sizes.
You can get a good idea of that if you play with the variance calculator on this site.
I know it's hard to run under EV for a long period, but you shouldn't let that affect you too much. The fact that your EV ROI is (very) good is great news ! Actually, it would be much much worse if it was the opposite (EV ROI breakeven and ROI 5%), because chances would be bigger that you just ran good, and it wouldn't last forever.
EV ROI isn't a perfect measure, your "true" ROI could still be quite different, but it's a good indicator that you're a winning player (mathematically chances are good, and what you write tends to confirm it). So franky, be happy because that's definitely the most important thing. If you keep playing and learning, things will change at some point, for sure.
Another very important thing : don't be sad or depressed because you run bad. Variance is the reason why poker exists in the first place (otherwise nearly no losing player would keep playing for a long time). You have to accept variance as a fundamental aspect of poker. Poker is a beautiful game, that you play because you love it. It's a choice that you made. No reason to feel depressed about that, you don't play poker to feel sad, and there's really no reason to be sad.
To give an image : life is sometimes easy, sometimes hard. Sometimes you get over-rewarded (seems to at least), sometimes it looks like you fight for years and get nothing in return. But when life is hard, if you keep fighting, the fruits finally come if they have to come and are often better than what you would have expected. Also, more importantly, you realized that you learned a lot in the process and became a stronger person (which is just crucial).
Poker is just a game, but you can make some parallels. If you choose to keep working and keep loving the game, chances are that if you're a true winner you'll get the fruits of your work in the future, and you'll have learned a lot in the process (in poker and maybe even in life). Satisfaction might be even bigger than the one you'd have if you had run better right now.
Hope that will help. I don't encourage you to keep playing this game or even to keep playing poker. Only you can know if it's good or not for you. I just try to help with my experience and my view of these things :)

what often remains unnoticed

what often remains unnoticed is that variance can and will also work in your favour, but the human psyche tends to take that for granted. have you ever read a post of someone saying: "i am 200 BI above EV, although i only play mediocre and pretty fishy tbh. when will the tides finally turn?"

as already mentioned: stay in there, enjoy the game, laugh at people who play bad and are lucky. the fact that you are not tilting is a good thing. many people tend to play bad during downswings and wouldn´t have a positive ev-adjusted ROI like you do. congratulations on that and keep it up.

Hey man,

I know exactly how you feel, I was run down to the ground last week with no hope. NO HOPE ! But I spoke to a few guys here just like you and skyped a bit, and even though I felt like a wimp afterwards it was good to get it off my chest and talk to some better players about my angst.
I think after getting such a positive response from the guys above I think you should treat yourself to a day off from Poker, enjoy some other things for 24 hours which I'm sure you've been neglecting. Think about Poker, what it really means to you.
Im sure you'll come back feeling good about your game !
Good luck man.

Guys thank you again for your

Guys thank you again for your thoughts. I came to some interesting conclusions about myself after reading your posts-definitely to much result oriented, definitely to much poker in my head 24h a day etc....so I will take few days off and enjoy in free time and then comeback fresh and positive+ motivated!!! I know you were all in my shoes at least couple of times due to the nature of the game and that is why I respect your thinking even more. GL to you all!!!!

Just keep at it, 5.4% ev roi

Just keep at it, 5.4% ev roi is reallly good, probably shows potential for moving up to higher stakes, thus your current objective is merely to grind together a bankroll and the experience for that. It's a lot of buy in's you're running under ev, but in the end it are only 3.5$'s.
