I think limping is profitable when they dont attack your limps because then you go make the limp dont risk many chips.You are then in position and can make the stab. They will usually fold way too much and on my level (low stakes) they are not defending well enough against the limp which makes it a powerful weapon.You may also limp very strong hands that you can limp/shove. That way you can balance your limping range!
It can be nice, definitely.The downside is that you also get a lot of insta folds preflop from very weak hands when you minraise, and stuff that flops poorly (K2o, J4o, etc.), so if a player is folding OOP, you really gain a ton immediately by minraising wide.And of course, if your opponent calls or raises a lot preflop, they are probably a bit more likely to raise your limps somewhat wide. I think the limp trap advantages are very small except against the most aggressive limp raisers, meaning that mixing in monster limps (aside from situations where opponents fold a lot OOP to a raise) is usually not appropriate as a default strategy in my mind.
