I've got no problem with the way you played this hand. Betting is also fine, but if you bet the flop, I would give up on the paired turn, or at least bet small hoping for a cheap showdown.
The important thing is that you adjust to your opponent. In this instance, we've seen that villain checked down J-high. So, in subsequent hands, we should be less likely to hero call, and more likely to simply check down when we have weak showdown value, rather than betting.
