Interview with Paul "PBogz" Bogin

Limits: reg speeds 50/100/200; turbos mostly 60/100's; hypers 40/60's some 120's; $10 and $40 spin n goes

Memorable quote: I hate that poker is heading into formats that have much more variance

Charles Hawk: Introduce yourself to our community.

Paul Bogin: My name is Paul. I'm 29 years old. I'm mostly Italian with a mix of a few other things and I live in NY. I've been playing poker going on 9 years. I started off playing in high school when a few friends invited me to a home game. At first, I didn't really show any interest, but as soon as my brother won a few bucks while playing online, I was hooked. He ended up sending me 5 bucks and I haven't looked back since.

Hobbies: Fishing, playing sports, video games, working out.

Charles Hawk: What poker advice you would give to new players who are dreaming of reaching high stakes?

Paul Bogin: The advice I'd give you would be to simply work harder than everybody else. Poker is a game where you can get very down on yourself, but also very overconfident at times. The best part is that no matter how you could get, there is always room for improvement. Although very difficult. Taking the emotion out of the game is very important. Tilting off a roll is all too common in the world of poker.

Charles Hawk: What’s your opinion about balancing poker with other live activities, and how do you do that?

Paul Bogin: Balance is honestly a big key to success. I preach meditation and hobbies all the time to my students. If you're not happy outside of poker, your mood will be based off of how you're playing that day. As we all know, poker has many swings, and that is just not going to be healthy for the mind or body. I also believe that it helps greatly with controlling tilt when you have other things to do besides poker.

Charles Hawk: How is turbo action these days (comparing with year ago or more)? Are you confident about being able to profit the same and get the same action  few years from now?

Paul Bogin: Turbo action is very slow... I'm forced to hunt anybody who sits in the 60's lobbies and will still give respect to a few guys playing 100's.

Charles Hawk: You are a husng.com coach as well. What is most exciting about coaching for you?  Do you have any specific philosophy (methods, advices) how to prepare a break-even player into a winning one?

Paul Bogin: I love husng.com for giving me the chance to coach when I was just starting out. I really love coaching because it allows you to help others and build relationships with people all over the world. Through coaching I've created some really good friendships. My method is just to preach vulnerability. I know that all students are different and I approach each student with the guidelines that fit their persona. Coaching with me is very laid back and "easy". Some players are very nervous about showing their mistakes to other players and I'm very good at putting them at ease.

Charles Hawk: Tell me about your self-educational process. Also: how do you learn Spin and Goes?

Paul Bogin: Reading, watching videos and review always helps me improve my game. Coaching also helps keeping yourself in tune with your own game. I stream spin and goes and play every other format when I'm not streaming: http://www.twitch.tv/pbogz1114

Spins are an interesting game. A ton of variance and it will really test out a poker player's mental capacity. Learning 3way was tough but heads up is where we have a big advantage.
