Interview with Paul "PBogz" Bogin Part 2

Last week, Charles interviewed Paul “Pbogz” Bogin. This week, he got a chance to ask Paul a few more questions. And even better, there's three hand reviews from Pbogz at the end!

Charles Hawk: What was the hardest thing when you started playing poker professionally? What is the biggest weaknesses that you successfully eliminated from your game?

Paul “Pbogz” Bogin: The hardest part was separating home life from work. Since you work from home, you always feel like you're on the clock. I believe it's unhealthy to live like that, and need to make sure you think to a certain schedule. Like a real job. My biggest weakness was getting enough volume. Some due to where I live, but overall I found myself taking too many breaks in the past. Now, not so much.

CH: How would you describe your game? What is your competitive advantage against the field?

PB: I would describe my game as solid. I do everything really well and my instincts are for sure my competitive edge. Both live and online.

CH: Do you get bored when grinding? Do you have any advice on how to keep focused when playing bad players?

PB: I do get bored grinding at times. Definitely these Spin n Goes. I find them very lackluster. When I get bored, I'll usually fire up a playlist and it helps pass the time. Or I'll just start streaming on twitch.

CH: What are the best ways to increase multitabling skills? How would you advise players who can comfortably play up to 2 tables?

PB: Multitabling didn't come easy to me because I've always been bad at multitasking. For starters, I'd say move down a buy in when you start to add another table, just because you might lose a little more than usual. Secondly, don't get down on yourself too quick if you find yourself losing or feeling overwhelmed. Stay positive and give it at least 7 days before you make any major decisions. Overall, with practice it will slowly becoming easier.

CH: How about bankroll management? How many buy-ins would you suggest to have to play comfortably in turbos, hypers, or spins?

PB: Turbos, you can probably get away with 50 buy ins, but if you have the money to spare, having a larger bankroll is always going to put the mind at ease.

Hypers, 100 buy ins cause of the swings, and spin n goes, 200 buy ins. Which sounds insane, but to feel confident and not let the swings bother you. 200 is a good start.

CH: What are your long term poker goals?

PB: My long term poker goals are to start playing more live and continue to move up the ranks. It's very hard not being allowed to play on Pokerstars. Not only does it hurt my volume, but it prevents me from having a bigger name both with coaching and playing. Hopefully, in time, things will change with online poker, but until then. I'll just be playing many formats, streaming and coaching just to get by.

I find this hand to be very intriguing because of the turn. A lot of players feel the need to value bet this turn, but it can get tricky, very fast. This is a spot where the turn is not great for our range and a good player could apply a ton of pressure if he/she chooses. Overall, this is a spot where you want to check back in order to keep the pot small and reevaluate river.

This hand is interesting, mainly because people tend to get a little reckless in 3bet pots. In this hand I could limp jam or min raise. I decided to min raise mainly because this was a readless player. When villain checks back the turn, it could mean many things. He could be trapping, checking back with intentions of turning hand into bluff catcher, but on a dry flop like this he / she should be cbetting with most air hands. This is why I check back the flop as well with the mid pair. When the turn hits and he bets, it looks even more like value / thin value. I elect to flat turn as well and reevaluate river. On river, I hit the gin card and it's smooth sailing from there. I must say that I'm not in love with his river bet. I feel it's a bit too thin and would be better off ch calling since there happens to be a good amount of missed draws on the board.

This is a pretty simple hand in a Spin n Go that a lot of players tend to screw up. We raise a2o and hit bottom pair on the flop. This is a dry enough flop to potentially cbet the flop, but checking back this flop and trying to get to showdown is also very good. As you see, we were happy to check back flop turn and river and take the hand down.
