river scare card, check or value bet?

No Limit Holdem Tournament • 2 Players$1.38+$0.12 Hand converted by the official HUSNG.com hand converter BBHero1540  SBthevillian741460  Effective Stacks: 73bb Blinds 10/20 Pre-Flop (30, 2 players) Hero is BB thevillian74 calls 10, Hero checks Flop (40, 2 players) Hero checks, thevillian74 checks Turn (40, 2 players) Hero bets 30, thevillian74 raises to 60, Hero raises to 180, thevillian74 calls 120 River (400, 2 players) Hero ?I'm not sure what is best here. The villain was very straight forward and not prone to bluffing so he at least had some part of the board. My concern is when the river hits it possibly completes a higher straight for him, especially given he called by turn 3 bet.so what would you consider optimal, checking or a value bet? And if a value bet, how much?Thanks..

I think if the villain is

I think if the villain is playing really straight forward you can underbet this river as a blocker bet maybe 130-150 he might just call with something worse and he will only raise you with better so it will be an easy fold, although if he is playing straight forward and he difnately has a piece of the board it might be better to just check because he will check back anything less than a straight so you can decide whether to fold the river depending on his sizing. not sure would be intersting to see what someone else thinks.

Longjohn, your post was very

Longjohn, your post was very 'on the fence' :P  You didn't really say what you think is best :) I think you were right the first time in my opinion.  Bet/fold around 150ish.   I think there are enough hands you can get value from that might otherwise check back the scary river.  Like Longjohn pointed out, if he raises, then its an easy fold.

Spot on again happyham.   I

Spot on again happyham. I checked river and he checked behind. He had a Q4. A value bet that I missed out on.
